We're here to help! GDC is a family centred studio; meaning parents and families of our students are a priority. Starting a new activity can be just as overwhelming as it is exciting! We are happy to answer your questions, in hopes of creating a positive experience. Below is a list of FAQs to help you and your child feel prepared:
WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE TO CLASS? Bringing your child to a new setting can be exciting and nerve wracking for them. We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early for the first class to allow time to explore the space with your child. We also welcome stopping in for a quick visit on a day prior to the first class!
IS THIS A PARENTED CLASS? Our classes are Non-parented, however we do ask that parents stay in the lobby area. If your child needs assistance using the washroom, it is required that parents be in the lobby for the entire class time.
MY CHILD IS VERY SHY, WHAT CAN I DO? You are not alone! Many young children are eager to get into a dance class, but may have shy behaviour when arriving to the studio. We encourage parents to join the first 1-3 classes, as this helps role model for your child that they are in a safe space with the instructor and other children. Our Little Performers program is a great place to start for your child to begin developing a relationship with the studio and their instructor(s).
CAN I WATCH MY CHILD'S DANCE CLASS(ES)? Once your child is comfortable in class, we ask that parents stay in the lobby. Although it can be so wonderful as a parent to watch your child, unfortunately it can be very distracting for your child and others to stay engaged. Ribbons, scarves, & new moves are all very exciting for your preschooler, and class time can quickly pass by as a child shows their parent each new thing. Learning to participate in a class setting without a parent is a big and exciting step! During our season, we have 'Parent Watch' days, which are organized days when parents are invited to come in and observe what we have been working on. (Notice will be given ahead of time to invite families in!)
WHAT DOES A PERFORMANCE DAY LOOK LIKE? All dancers will need to arrive at the performance area 1 hour before their performance time, in costume, with their hair done. 'Performer parents' are a select group that is allowed to stay in the backstage waiting area with their child, leading up to 15 minutes before performance time. GDC has a great community of families - there are many backstage volunteers, games & toys for the young ones to play with as they wait for their exciting moment to get out on stage!
